Stephen Strasburg cranks it up at Nationals Park

With an explosive fastball, crackling slider and baffling changeup, former San Diego State ace and number one pick in the 2009 MLB Draft Stephen Strasburg is ready for the large time. He’s the kind of pitcher a team can conceivably build around, according to scouts. Now Stephen Strasburg will have the chance to prove that he can make hitters look bad on the large stage. His first start could be at 7:05 p.m. Eastern tonight against a Pittsburgh Pirates that is no pushover. MLB.com indicates that this pre-announced start for Strasburg has been sold out for well over a month.

Contrary to reports, Stephen Strasburg does not defy the laws of physics

Clearly, The Washington Post’s recent blog post on Stephen Strasburg which claims that the 21-year-old can bend natural laws with his pitching repertoire is a joke. For instance, Strasburg allegedly has a pitch that stops in midair, also as a quantum bender that blinks from the middle of the strike zone to behind a hitter’s back. However, the blogger’s point is that individuals have gone too far in lavishing praise on a pitcher who has yet to see Major League action. In addition to a sellout crowd, a lot more than 200 members of the media can be in attendance at the game, an astronomical number that gives some indication of just what individuals expect from Stephen Strasburg.

Stephen Strasburg surely has the numbers

At San Diego State University last year, Stephen Strasburg went 13-1 with a 1.32 ERA in 15 starts that integrated 195 strikeouts and only 19 walks over 109 innings pitched. That was a lot more than enough to merit the Golden Spikes Award as the nation’s top amateur baseball player. After college, Stephen Strasburg was snatched up by the Nationals and kept on rolling at Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse, places that 2010 MLB Draft pick Bryce Harper will see soon.

Innings could be limited, but not expectations

Nationals coaches may have Stephen Strasburg on a strict pitch count, but media and fans remain liberal in their expectations for the hurler. A sea of Stephen Strasburg T-shirts, hats and a lot more can be on display at Nationals Park. Fans may go to apply for no fax paycheck loans with instant approval in order to finance all of this idol worship. Let’s hope Stephen Strasburg won’t drown in this river of infinite expectation. The young man certain has skill, but he needs room in this, the Strasburg debut. Possibly someday he’ll take the place of Sidd Finch and throw a fastball that – like his legend – simply arrives.
